Good Bye Junior

Published by ashbirdlady at 3:33 pm under HOT TOPIC Edit This

Junior on his favorite swingWell, it has been a week since Junior passed away in my hands. The day was Sunday March 1st at 11:30 pm. He was my first senegal. I got him about 5 years ago as a wedding anniversary present.

He always had a lot to say:
Hello
Shut up!
Baby what happen?
Hey!
Will you be quiet?
What the hell
Ring Ring
Boobie
We would say hail Junior and he would lift one of his little feet way up high

I am sure there are more things….

Out of all my birds he was the bravest. Had no fear.
He was placed in the local pet shop because he bit his owner. Lucky me! I saw him and fell in love right away. Now don’t get me wrong, he did draw blood from me too. But we learned to communicate and he had not bitten me for a really long time.

I was just horrified when I heard him fall off his favorite swing. I knew it was bad and rushed over to pick him up. In his last seconds I was able to tell him I love him and pet him. My husband held me and I held Junior and cried. It is too soon. I don’t want to let him go!

First thing the next morning I took him for a necropsy. Very important! All but one of my birds is rescued. Meaning history is unknown. How scary! I needed to know what happened to my precious bird.
The ladies at the vet cried with me and hugged me. They totally understood.
The vet called later that day and told me that he had an infection and his liver was balled up in knots. She was going to send him out for further tissue testing. Just to make sure there were not any contagious issues.

Friday I finally did get the tissue results back.
His little lungs were black like he was in a fire or lived with smokers. He had really bad liver problems. It was scarring up and not able to do its job. Junior got an infection and his little liver and heart could not take it. The liver sweated fluid and that put too much pressure on his heart and air sacks.

My poor baby! I feel so bad.

Please make sure to take your birds to vet and at least get a well bird exam and a fecal or grahm stain. It could save a birds life! Or your whole flock!

Tomorrows post will be all about what a Well Bird exam and Fecal should cover.

Thanks for listening

Christa

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost one of my precious ones 4 years ago and I still think of him every day. I have his portrait tattooed on my right arm from shoulder to elbow along with the inscription Precious Flute, Rescue for love… as my personal tribute to him. He was a wild caught Mollucan whose first person died after having him for only 5 years. He went into such deep mourning that he became a self injurer. When I got him after he’d been passed from home to home and from breeder to breeder for abother several years he only had a few straggly feathers on wings and tail although his head was beautiful. By the time he passed he had beautiful wings and tail and down covered his back and chest and he had stopped plucking. I miss him so much, still.

I’m so, so sorry for your loss. Bless your heart a million times, though, for giving him your love while he was yours. I’m sure he felt that love and was happy.
