POOP

Published by ashbirdlady at 10:20 am under Health Edit This

Another thing that you can check daily in your routine pet bird care is their feces.

I use news paper or white paper towels in the cages. Usually, I just use newspaper. My family saves it for me and it fits almost exactly into the cages. If there is a bird that I am particularly interested in watching I use the white paper towels. This makes it really easy to see what is going on.

Parrot Poop is made up of three things:

  • Feces: This will be the green tubular part that kind of curls up. Color will be green to brown depending on what base diet your bird is eating.
  • Urates: This is the white/off white part of the dropping made by the kidneys
  • Urine: This is the clear liquid part of the dropping.

There should be no odor if your bird is healthy. Size will vary depending on the size of your parrot. Cockatiel Poop is a lot smaller than an African Grey parrots! Also check each birds vent area. It should be clean and have nothing stuck to the feathers. If you notice a build up of feces, blood or anything else abnormal please take them to a vet right away!

I recommend glancing at the papers when you change out or offer the food. Once or twice a day.

Sam, one of my African greys was thought to have diabetes. The vet put him on some medicine to help get that under control. His main symptom was very watery poops. It was going through a few sheets of newspaper!

Here are a couple of pictures taken after we started giving him his medicine.

Here is what a normal poop should look like:

We certainly did not cover all there is about parrot feces. Please feel free to post questions and I will address them in further posts.
